MARKET OVERVIEW

Winnipeg Welcomes You!
Known for its ethnic diversity and international flair, award winning restaurants and friendly people, Winnipeg is the capital city of Manitoba and is located in the heart of the North American continent. Winnipeg is known far and wide thanks in part to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Folklorama, the Winnipeg Folk Festival and The Forks, which has been designated as a National Historic Site. From the performing arts, to a culturally-diverse landscape, Winnipeg truly offers it all.

With a population of over 742,000, Winnipeg’s central location and time zone are well suited for doing business across North America. Winnipeg has one of the most diverse economies of any major city in Canada. Leading industries include transportation and distribution, aerospace, agribusiness, finance and insurance, life sciences and biotechnology, information and communications technology, apparel and furniture manufacturing, electric power and media.

According to Conference Board of Canada projections, Winnipeg is poised for steady growth over the next few years. This positive gain has been bolstered in part by the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program, which provides a framework to recruit and nominate skilled workers and business immigrants. This program has coordinated business, labour and government interests in expanding employment and business enterprises in Manitoba through immigration.

Transportation is key to Manitoba’s trade sector and plays a pivotal role in Winnipeg and throughout Manitoba while serving as a catalyst of all economic activity. Transportation represents 6.8% of Manitoba’s GDP and total transportation employment in Manitoba has grown to nearly 50,000 jobs.

Winnipeg’s central geographic location in North America enables the city to be:

  • The northern gateway for the Mid-Continent Trade Corridor, linking Canada, the United States and Mexico,
  • The eastern hub of the Western Canada Transportation System, and
  • A primary or secondary port of entry for polar transportation through the port of Churchill to Russia and Eurasia.

Winnipeg is expanding its position as one of North America’s most important trading centres through the development of CentrePort Canada, a world class inland port. CentrePort Canada will use the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport and surrounding land as a hub to import goods from Asia and Europe, then distribute those goods throughout North America via air, land, rail and road.

Another major landmark project in Winnipeg is the establishment of the National Museum of Human Rights at The Forks, which will be the first Canadian national museum outside of the National Capital Region. With an expected completion date of late 2012, the museum’s intention is to increase understanding and awareness about human rights, promote respect for others, and encourage reflection, dialogue, and action.

Winnipeg mixes business with pleasure, opportunity with productivity, and is an ideal place to call home.
